Membership 2014/15

We have introduced a new membership fee structure for 2014/15 consisting of an joining fee of £25 to cover affiliations plus monthly payments of £15 collected by Direct Debit. Alternatively members may choose to pay term by term at £55.

Colchester Junior 2* Tournament

The Colchester Junior 2* tournament will be held on 1st November 2014 at Colchester Leisure World.

You can either enter online via Tournament Software or using the Entry Form.

Payments must be received before the closing date either by cheque or bank transfer. Please contact Simon Gilhooly if you wish to pay by bank transfer.

Back to School ..... Back to Badminton

Our programme for the new season will kick off on Monday 8th September. Sessions during the autumn term are as follows;

Junior Club for ages 8-13 Mondays 7-8pm
Junior Club for ages 14-17 Mondays 8-9pm
Adult Pay & Play Mondays 8-10pm

Developments Squad (by invitation) Tuesdays 6:30pm - 8pm
Senior Club Tuesdays 7:30pm - 10pm

Matches from October Thursdays 7:30pm - 10pm

Junior subscriptions have been held at £35 for each term (normally about 12 sessions). Please make cheques payable to Stanway Badminton Club. We will also offer electronic payment methods this year ... details to follow.

For senior members will we be offering a new monthly payment plan. The Treasurer will be contacting members with details soon.

AGM and Presentation

This year we are going to combine the AGM with a presentation of cups won during the season and a social.

The event will be;

There will be a buffet provided. Please confirm to Simon G if you are planning to attend.

Mixed Doubles Coaching

As part of our summer club activities we wanted to include some some coaching / training sessions and this will start with a couple of sessions focusing on Mixed Doubles on 26th June and 3rd July. Subject to numbers this will take place on 2 courts leaving 2 courts for the normal club night.

Time: 8-10pm
Place: Stanway School
Fee: £5 for Stanway members (normal summer fee), £8 for guests

Essex Vets Win National Championships

Three Stanway members represented Essex in the Veterans County Championship national finals at Lilleshall over the weekend.

Andy Lager and Simon Gilhooly were in the Over 40s team that defeated Gloucester in the semi-final thanks to a final mixed win by Andy with Justine Miller of PowerPlay. Despite an injury to Ian Smith (Epping) the team were able to overcome Leicester (7-5) in the final thanks to strength in the ladies & mixed matches. Julia Cloughton was a key member of the team that won through the regional stage.

Trevor Rogers captained the Over 45s team to a convincing win in their semi-final against Avon (11-1) before defeating Cheshire (8-4) to retain the trophy they had won a year earlier.

Unfortunately the Over 50s team ran into a very strong Yorkshire side in their final.

Summer Term Plans

During the summer term (Easter - late July) we will have the following sessions available;

Monday 7-8pm Junior Club
Monday 8-10pm Pay & Play - anyone welcome £5 per night, shuttles provided
Thursday 8-10pm Club Night - club members & guests; £5 per night, shuttles provided

This is effective immediately so the first session is Thursday 24th April.

Easter Holidays Badminton

The Colchester & East Essex Badminton Federation has organised two daytime sessions of badminton for kids during the Easter holiday;

Tue 8th April @ Highwoods Sports Centre - 10am to 12pm
Tue 15th April @ Manningtree Sports Centre - 10am to 12pm

Each session costs £8 or you can book both for £15.

Monday Nights

From the 4th March our Monday night sessions will look like this;

6:30-7:30pm Junior Club Session 1
7:30-8:30pm Junior Club Session 2
8-10pm Adult Pay & Play - on 1 court from 8-8:30pm, then 4 courts

These sessions will run up to Easter with the last session on 7th April. We will confirm plans for after Easter ASAP.

Colchester Junior Level 1 Tournament Results

Ellen Hazelhurst was our only winner at the junior level 1 tournament at the weekend. She battled through two marathon three set matches to defeat opposition from Chipmunks and Eagles clubs.

Christian Martin progressed to the final stage in the Y4/5 boys singles and took a set off the winner to finish third overall. Jamie Martin was unlucky to draw the eventual winner, Ben Calder, in his group and only lost out narrowly. Shiven Hirani won his pool before losing out in the quater-final of the U19 boys singles.

Well done to all those that entered.

Details of the start times for the Level 1 tournament this weekend are now available on the Federation website.

New Junior Badminton Session

We are currently looking into the possibility of starting a new junior badminton session to run from 6pm - 7pm on Monday nights. Our existing 7-8pm group is fully subscribed but new places might open up if anyone wishes to switch to the earlier session.

Unfortunately the school can't allow us into the hall until 6:30pm at the earliest so we are having to reconsider our plans. Thank you to everyone that expressed an interest; we will try to come up with a viable plan and get in touch.

Colchester Junior Tournament

We are running a junior tournament at Leisure World over the weekend of 22nd / 23rd February. This is a Level 1 (1*) tournament ideal for players that are not regular tournament players.
