Essex Mixed Five-Oh
Our Essex Mixed team moved to 5 wins, zero loses last night with a 6-3 victory away at Dragons but the final scoreline doesn't quite reflect a tight match with a few nervous moments with the scores standing at 3-3.
The night didn't start to plan as top pair Michelle and Simon lost their first set 11-21 in a whirlwind of smashes but recovered with a change of tactics to take the next two sets comfortably. Playing slightly out of the usual order, Kate & Martin won their first but then lost the next two and Julia C and Alex were unlucky against Dragons top pair leaving us all tied at 3 each.
The last set of matches all went our way, thanks in particular to Julia and Alex coming out ahead in a tense battle against Donna O'Sullivan and Lee Price.

The next two matches are against new team Danbury, currently unbeaten, and the tough tie against Leighway.

Centre Parcs School Competition
The Colchester area round on the national Centre Parcs competition for schools took place last week. CRGS won the boys U16 and St. Benedict's the U14. In the girls events St. Helena were winners at U16 and County High School for Girls at U14.

Junior Challenge Match
Our junior club played the latest round of the Federation Junior Challenge Cup on Saturday. Our team was made up by Giorgia, Ellen, Jack, Sam and Lewis.
We narrowly lost to Chipmunks by the odd rubber (9-8) and had a convincing win over Blackwater (14-2). There were some very close games especially Lewis's 25-23 win over Adaam from Chipmunks.
Many thanks to Chipmunks for hosting the event at Highwoods and to all our players.

Stanway School on Schedule
I went over to review progress at Stanway School on Monday. They are on schedule and so we should be able to return after Xmas as planned. Our matches on 3rd January may be played at TLA - check with the team captains.
In addition to the work inside the hall itself, the entrance area has been completely remodelled. There is a new doorway directly onto the car park area, new toilets and a new office overlooking the hall for the PE staff.

Suffolk Senior Bronze
For the first time Suffolk will host a Senior Bronze tournament on 17th November 2012. The venue is the new Suffolk One sixth form college located just off the A12 / A14 junction (Toys'R'Us).
This brand new sports hall boasts six badminton courts and is the home to the successful Ipswich Performance Centre. The Bronze tournaments are organised into pools so everyone is guarenteed at least two games in each section and the whole event is run on a single day. With this being even closer than the Essex events it's a great opportunity for players from the club. Anyone who enters the Colchester Open will find good competition here.

Directions for Monkwick Sports Centre
The main Thomas Lord Audley School entrance is locked in the evenings so the entrance for the sports centre is off School Road (sign posted for the Junior School and the Ormiston Centre).

Stanway Club Night is Back!
The first club night of the 2012/13 will be on Tuesday 4th September from 7:30pm.
Most members will be aware that the sports hall at Stanway School has had a leaky roof for some time that has occassionally impacted our play. The school has received a grant to repair the roof and do other maintenance including the repainting of the court outlines. This work will commence in mid-September and will take until Xmas to complete.
Therefore from Monday 17th September all our activities will be at Thomas Lord Audley School (Monkwick Sports Centre).
After Xmas we will return to Stanway School. The school management also has some plans for improving the entrance and hopefully the situation with changing rooms and showers. This should include an entrance direct from the car park.
Fees for the new season are now due - full membership was set at £110 for the coming season.

Senior Restricted 2012
The Essex Senior Restricted tournament will be held on 29th September 2012 at William Edwards School, Grays. This event is open to all Essex qualified players. The William Edwards school is the new home of the Badminton Academy and boasts a brand new 8 court facility dedicated to badminton.

Junior Restricted Tournaments 2012
The dates for the 2012 Junior Restricted tournaments have been released. Restricted tournaments take place at the beginning of the season in each county and are restricted to players that are qualified to represent that county, normally be birth or residence.
The dates are;
U17 Restricted - 15th Sept
U13 Restricted - 29th Sept
U15 Restricted - 30th Sept
Since all the best players from the county will be entering these events they are great tournaments to judge your progress.

Epic Rally
An amazing rally between two of the best Mixed Doubles pairs on the professional circuit. It seems like an endless rally; I haven't counted the shots but it's a lot. However take a look at the elapsed time at the end of the clip! Also notice how tired the Indonesian man (Nova Widianto) on the near side is at the end of the rally.

Annual General Meeting
Notice of the Annual General Meeting for the season 2012 / 12 is hereby given.
The meeting will take place on Thursday 24th May, starting 8pm at Colchester & East Essex Cricket Club. Access to the clubhouse is via Catchpool Road; the turning next to the Fire Station on Cowdray Avenue.
The bar will be open before the meeting so feel free to come down for a drink and a chat from 7:30pm.

Tournament News
Joe reached the semi-final of the Men's Singles at the Middlesex Open just before Xmas beating the #3 seed along the way. In the latest BADMINTON England ranking Joe had risen to number 143.
In the Master's Inter-County Tournament last weekend Stanway had three members of the winning Over 40's team; Trevor, Andy and Simon. The team won promotion back to the Premier Division after narrowly missing out for the last two year.
